Dear Diary,
Tomorrow is Mothers’ Day, and I’m grateful for the many wonderful mothers in my life.
I’ve seen my own mother sacrifice for all of us kids from day one and watched as, somewhat miraculously, that sacrifice brings her joy. I don’t know who I would be without her.
My stepmother, too, is an incredible woman, who treats my kids as if they were her own grandkids, checks in on us when we are feeling sick, makes sure my dad remembers important dates (haha!), and loves with her whole heart.
I’ve also been blessed with a wonderful stepmother-in-law whom I admire for her resilience through difficult times, and I’m glad for the happiness she has found since.
But, perhaps most on my mind today is my sweet mother-in-law, who passed away unexpectedly in 2015. And, as my husband rarely reads these entries, I feel safe in sharing a special surprise with you one day early ๐คซ.
She is on my mind because I’ve been preparing a gift for my sweetheart with baby pictures and entries from her journal during the time she was pregnant with Joe.
She writes of how she was 3 weeks overdue (although she told me in person once that she believed the doctor just got the due date wrong), and worried for her first baby to make his appearance in this world. She tells of how the car wouldn’t start when she finally went into labor! She speaks of the awe she felt when he was born, and how she loved to watch her husband care for their son. She talks about all of the help both sets of grandparents offered when they arrived home from the hospital, and how everyone loved my husband’s long eyelashes, which still draw me in today.
It was a beautiful gift to read these words. What a sacred witness of a mother’s love.
And, although I’ve struggled with pieces of my own journey throughout motherhood, I can’t help but feel supremely grateful for the little ones who made me a mom.
I hope to honor their grandmothers by continuing on in a legacy of love, even amidst hard times and difficult emotions – a legacy that they started, and those who came before.
Here’s to such a legacy.

You are doing a beautiful thing and I am sure your husband will love it! Itโs amazing to see while all mothers have different stories, different journeys, hail from different parts of the world, and generation, their love for their babies is just the same.
